Capability Chronicles
The Capability Chronicles is a program that highlights the strengths and contributions of people with disabilities in our community.  Initiated by The Arc of Bismarck and produced by Dakota Media Access, this program was developed by people with disabilities, family members and professionals, with the purpose of showing the unique value all individuals possess by featuring the achievements and successes of people who have a disability through media.

Mission
To create awareness of people with disabilities in the community by highlighting the strengths of individuals through media.

Vision
To explore the unique value all individuals possess while encouraging the acceptance of all in our shared community.

Values
All are equal - each individual has unique attributes and talents which are appreciated by all - people are not downsized based on ability - differences are embrace

How to get involved
The Capability Chronicles is always looking for volunteers.  Opportunities are varied and include program coordination, camera work, editing and directing.  If you are committed to disability related issues and would like to give your time to a valuable project contact Veronica at The Arc of Bismarck for more information.  If you have an idea for a show, guest or would just like to give us feedback on the program email TheArcBismarck@gmail.com.

Hunting & Fishing

Hunting and fishing are two of North Dakota’s great pastimes.  This segment explores the great outdoors from a new perspective; learn about adaptive recreation and exploring one’s passion.  Featured guests include Charles Sorenson, a Natural Resource Specialist with the Corps of Engineers and Nevada Sorenson a 12 year old sportsman.  



Service Animals

Service animals are trained to perform a variety of tasks that assist people with disabilities.  Featured guests include Chris Danielson a trainer from Great Plains Assistance Dogs Foundation Inc. and Trevor Vannett  a person who has a service animal.  For more information on service animals click here.



Visitability

Visitability is housing trend growing in popularity.  This segment explains the basic requirements of a visitable home and explores the importance of access to individuals with disabilities.  Featured guests include Royce Schultz of Dakota Center for Independent Living and Tricia Schlosser a sales associate with Century 21 Morrison Realty.  Click here for more information on visitability.




Assistive Technology

Assistive technology (AT) is a piece of equipment that is used to maintain or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities.   Learn about different devices and how they enhance the quality of life for those that use it.  Featured guests include Peggy Shireley, an AT and Bob Puyear an assistive technology user.  For more information on AT click here.   



Athletics: Inclusion at its Best

Football is a favorite American pastime, but also a great way to build leadership skills and teamwork.  Featured guests include Zach Feist a football player with a hearing disability at The University of Mary and Randy Lamberth one of Zach's favorite coaches.







Public Transportation
Anessa Pfeifer-Johnson, Misty Staiger and Sandy Wheeler sit down for an in-depth discussion on public transportation.
Public transportation is an incredibly beneficial service for people with disabilities in our community.  Learn about the CAT bus in Bismarck and how you and your friends can use it.  Featured guests include Misty Staiger marketing director at Bis-Man Transit and Sandy Wheeler a public transportation rider and a Bis-Man Transit board member.  Click here for more information on public transportation in the Bismarck area.



Partners in Policymaking

Partners in Policymaking is a program that teaches leadership skills, and the process of developing positive partnerships with individuals who make disability-related policy decisions.  Featured guests include Celane McWhorter, a national Partners speaker and Jessica Fleckenstein a parent of a child with a disability and a program participant.  For more information on the Partners program click here.






Gainful Employment

Employment and economic security are necessary for all people to fulfill hopes and dreams, including people with disabilities.  Gainful employment for individuals with disabilities includes the opportunity to earn a competitive wage in an integrated work setting.   Featured guests include Leon Dietrich, a person with a disability who maintains full time employment and Lisa Kudelka, a Human Resources Manager with Bismarck Public Schools.  For more information on competitive employment for people with disabilities click here.




The Great American Bike Race

The Great American Bike Race is an event put on by Medcenter One and the pediatric rehabilitation team in Bismarck.  The purpose of the event is to raise funds for children with Cerebral Palsy and related disabilities.  Featured guests include Isaac Burgad, a person with CP and Bruce Klootwyk a volunteer for GABR.  For more information on The Great American Bike Race click here.



Disabilities & the Performing Arts
L.I.S.T.E.N. Performing Arts in Grease.Performing arts are a cornerstone of culture and community activity.  Performing arts are now capitalizing on the varying and unique capabilities of all individuals.  Featured guests include:  Carla Tice, who currently coordinates the L.I.S.T.E.N. Performing Arts group and Donny Gamache, a performer who assumes the role of Danny Zuko in their musical rendition of Grease.





Americans with Disabilities Act
Emma Lewis-Sullivan talking about the importance of ADA compliance.The ADA opened up services and employment opportunities to millions of Americans with disabilities.  Essentially the law works to eliminate illegal discrimination against individuals with disabilities. Featured guests include:  Juna Wentz, who personally deals with accessibility issues in relation to the ADA and Emma Lewis-Sullivan a nationally recognized human rights activist, with over twenty years of personal and professional experience in the arena of disability rights who specializes in ADA compliance. Down syndrome is the most commonly occurring chromosomal condition.  Designer Genes, a group based out of Bismarck provides support to individuals with Down syndrome and their families.  Featured guests include:  Roxane Romanick, a parent of a child that has Down syndrome and a coordinator for Designer Genes and Jason Yeager, an active member of Designer Genes and a person who happens to have Down syndrome. Volunteerism in our CommunityOn the set of Capability Chronicles.
Volunteering has been growing in popularity in recent years.  In North Dakota 34% of our population volunteers, giving about 17 million hours of service each year.  Featured guests include:  Erin Pringle, a coordinator at RSVP+, Central and  also like to and Justin & Jason Nies, two avid volunteers who regularly contribute their time to different organizations and causes. Disability Etiquette & People First LanguageTammy DeSautel, disability advocate.
The importance of common courtesy when interacting with people that have a disability is paramount.  Learning about disability etiquette and people first language is a necessity for successful communication.  Featured guests include:  David Shove a Partners in Policymaking Graduate and Tammy DeSautel a parent of a child with a disability.
